The American Merchant Marine, American Merchant Marine Veterans (AMMV)
and the Sacramento Valley Chapter of AMMV.
In peace and war, the Merchant Marine provides sea transport vital to our economy and for
movement of war equipment and military personnel. In wartime, Merchant Mariners are
trained to be warriors to protect their cargo and to keep the lifeline of supplies unbroken.
Ably fighting alongside the Navy Armed Guard to contest submarine, surface and air attacks,
they were at the Normandy Invasion and all other invasions of WWII. The Merchant Marine
delivered 97 percent of all war materials to World War II fighting fronts and sustained a loss
of more than 1,500 ships. The extremely high casualty rate, 1 of every 26 men, was the
highest casualty ratio suffered by any branch of Armed Service in World War II. This fact has
often gone unnoticed.
American Merchant Marine Veterans has chapters throughout the United States. The
Sacramento Valley Chapter serves California's Sacramento Valley and surrounding areas.
Merchant Marine Veterans, who are not members of our organization, are welcome to join
the AMMV Chapter near them. The Sacramento Valley Chapter meets every third
Wednesday at 11:00 hours for a no host luncheon meeting at the American Legion Post
#447, 720 Santiago Ave, Sacramento. If you would like to attend or need more information,
please use the contact page.

Merchant Mariners sailed the Liberty ships, the Victory ships and the Tankers of
WWII. The Mariners who crewed these vessels are all combat veterans. All U.S.
Merchant Mariners sailed into harms way. When they left port, they were
immediately in submarine infested waters. No Merchant Marine veteran served
safely at home in a desk job.
THE UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE
From our shores to every theater of war my ships
have carried the troops, guns, planes, and supplies
needed for victory.
In the face of devastating losses, my Mariners never
gave up and always stayed true to our mission:
We will deliver.
No distance was too far and no danger too great to
keep us from our duty and triumph over the
tyrants of the world.

The National American Merchant Marine Veterans conference was held in
May 2008. One of the speakers was Lyle Kell, a veteran of WWII who sailed in
with the Navy Armed Guard. Lyle served on the Liberty Ship SS John Muir. He
was a member of the gun crew in the forward turrent as seen in the painting
below.
After the attacking enemy plane made its run only two of the seven man gun
crew in the forward turrent remained standing and Lyle was one of them.
Lyle believes the bombs dropped during the attack on the Muir were along the
last dropped in WWII.

The Merchant Marine flag stands proud
with the five other service flags at the
Sacramento Valley National VA Cemetery
for the very first time.
62 years after WWII the Merchant Marine
Flag is displayed at a National Cemetery.
Of the over 200,000 men who
sailed in the merchant ships during WWII,
only about 10,000 are still alive. Hopefully this
is another step toward acknowledging, in this
most meaningful way, the sacrifice made by
these brave Mariners during WWII and all wars.
These men answered their country's call when
their country needed them. Their losses were
one of every twenty-six men. The highest of
any branch.

Our World War ll Victory Ship lifeboat is mounted on a trailer for parades
but the trailer needed new axels and brakes. It was a hot dirty job but it is
ready. August 2008.
More Photos of the lifeboat repair.
..
The energy and knowledge base required to pull this off was beyond us
so we hired a a young fellow (Dean Smith) who had the attributes we
lacked. He did a good job. Thanks Dean and member Rich Harrington for
recruiting Dean. Now with a little cleaning and a coat of paint..adorned
with bright shiney banners... our boat will be ready for the next parade.
The Old Ships
